Major Refurbishment of Historic Listed Building with Little Greene Paints

Tythe House

Tythe House was built for Thomas Ambler in 1755, he was the improprieter of the tithes for the small Shropshire village of Ford, 5 miles west of the county town of Shrewsbury. It was later occupied by his tithe collector. Tithes were paid to religious organisations or as a compulsory tax to government set at one tenth of income. They were paid in kind such as agricultural produce or monetary value.

Tythe House is an early and well preserved small post-enclosure farmhouse and is especially notable as a dated example. V.C.H., Vol. VIII, p. 228.

Inside Tythe HouseTythe House is a red brick construction built on a coursed rubblestone plinth, it is a traditional two room plan built over two floors with projecting brick eaves courses and parapeted gable ends with chamfered red sandstone copings and yellow datestone. From the brick porch entrance the wood staircase leads to an upper floor with three bedrooms and a bathroom all with feature beamed ceilings. The large ground floor room has a large pair of transverse beams and large open fireplace with bread oven and cast-iron range.

Major Refurbishment of Tythe House The farmhouse had a history as a meeting place for the local hunts and still features memorabilia from past meets. The farmhouse and adjacent barn have fallen into disrepair in recent years and now, under new ownership, is undergoing a major refurbishment. Little Greene has been selected as the preferred paint system, with an extensive choice of modern and heritage colours from the "Colours of England" range. The colours are available in a wide range of products suitable for interior and exterior applications.

Littlegreene Colour CardsInterior design and choosing colour are a process that begins with our colour cards, the Colours of England and Colour Scales are both available online for free delivery.

Colours of England is a collection of 128 timeless, unique and distinct colours including authentic shades from the key periods in our architectural history. Colour Scales are based on six tonal families and have been selected to help produce harmonious schemes within Grey, Stone, Green and Neutral palettes.

In the Colour Scales book, the colours in vertical columns make great colour combinations which create schemes with balanced contrast. Lighter and darker tones are designed to help colour coordinate individual shades within similar and contrasting colours, making colour combinations as easy as possible.

For Tythe House a light colour scheme was desired to bring a sense of space to each room and contrast with the dark oak beams particularly in the main feature lounge. Linen Wash has been specified for the walls and Loft White for the skirting, interior doors, windows and sills.

Linen Wash is a pared down natural linen colour that can be used in place of white in many projects. It is classically paired with Portland Stone, Roman Plaster or Nether Red.

Loft White is an almost pure white with a high reflectance value it is classically paired with Tracery II, Urbane Grey or Trumpet.

ShowroomAbsolute Matt Emulsion has been selected for the interior walls and ceilings. It is a classic, chalky 3% flat finish which is a wipeable child safe paint, recommended for walls and ceilings suitable for modern and traditional lime plaster or over lining paper. The high pigment concentration produces a rich depth of colour in just two coats.

The woodwork in a modern home takes all the knocks particularly on doors, panelling and ledges. Intelligent Satinwood has been selected for all the woodwork in Tythe House. It is a tough durable finish which is totally washable. Available in a 30% sheen it adds a bit of sparkle in contrast to the chalky Absolute Matt Emulsion on the walls. Intelligent Satinwood is renowned for the sumptuous depth of colour, discernible sheen and ease of application.

In the kitchen the units and cabinets were installed a few years ago and makes a great opportunity to upcycle and revive the most important room in a family home while maintaining a cottage kitchen vibe. Green Stone has been specified on all the kitchen cabinets and doors.

Green Stone brings a sense of natural opulence, it is a stone colour with a green hue which has long been used in architectural decoration. Less common than rock tinted with iron salts, naturally occurring green stones often contained traces of copper, or cobalt. Green Stone is redolent of the ancient colour "Green Earth" used in ancient Roman frescoes and Russian iconography. Green Stone is classically paired with Green Stone Light, Jewel Beetle or Sage Green.

For repainting kitchen units one of the most unique products in the Little Greene range is Intelligent All Surface Primer. Intelligent ASP as it is known by most professional painters and decorators is a unique multi surface primer. It will adhere to wood, plastic, metals, ceramics and brickwork providing excellent adhesion and opacity to provide a smooth matt surface for your subsequent topcoats. It is available in all the Little Greene Colour Scales and Colours of England with just a slight tonal shift to distinguish the primer from the topcoat.

This finish is easy to apply and will reduce the number of coats required, it is a much more economical way of upcycling furniture, fittings and fixtures. In Tythe House Intelligent ASP Green Stone has been specified for the kitchen cabinets and drawers and Intelligent ASP Loft White as a primer on the previous painted dark oak doors and skirting. After the primer is applied to the kitchen units it will be overcoated with Intelligent Satinwood Green Stone providing colour, subtle sheen in a totally washable finish. The handles and hardware will be changed to an anodised light gold metallic to add the final touch of luxury. We will follow the developments at Tythe House over the coming months and report on the transformation with Little Greene Paints as the project progresses.
