Graphenstone GCS Exterior is a natural lime silicate English Heritage paint for exterior and interior lime rendered walls with a durable 2% matt finish. Ideal for town houses, cottages, period homes and restoration projects. It is a Class 1 Breathable paint with a low Sd value <0.06m, recommended on lime rendered and modern plastered walls and ceilings. Fire Rated Non Combustible A2-s1,d0 for added safety. Suitable for lime renders, plaster, gypsum, brickwork, modern plasters and previously painted surfaces. Remove all loosely adhering material back to a sound edge. The surface must be dry and free of surface contamination. Use Ambient Stabilising primer for absorbent surfaces. Apply two full coats of GCS Exterior by brush roller or spray. May be diluted with 10% water. Allow 2-4 hrs between coats, full cure in 30 days. Read the technical datasheet for more detailed information.
Breathable paint is formulated to allow water vapour to pass through the coating so moisture can escape from the wall instead of being trapped behind an impermeable paint film.
This vapour‑open behaviour helps regulate humidity within the wall and room, reducing the risk of blistering, flaking, damp spots and mould growth on the painted surface.
The Sd value is a measure of how much resistance to moisture diffusion a material has, when compared to a meter of air. The higher the Sd value, the greater resistance to vapour diffusion. Lower Sd values are more vapour open and are therefore more breathable. Graphenstone GCS Exterior is rated Class 1 breathable with an Sd value < 0.06m.
On suitable substrates, Graphenstone GCS Exterior allows trapped moisture to evaporate out through the coating, which can reduce surface condensation, tide marks and blistering associated with modern plastic based paints.
By letting walls dry naturally instead of sealing them, vapour‑open coatings support a healthier indoor environment and can limit conditions that encourage mould and mildew.
